Effective Leadership Coaching Skills: Understanding What Your Team Can Do and What They Cannot

A leader is just as human as their team members are. The top leaders of the world today have understood this-they have understood the humanness of their teams. In earlier times, effective leadership was a much-misunderstood concept. People who could dictate terms and elicit inhuman work from their subordinates were considered to be the most effective leaders. However, this was definitely a very wrong precedent for leadership. In the contemporary world, it is simply inconceivable to think of a leader who doesn't understand the human potentialities and shortcomings of their team.

You could become a much better leader if you just spent some time thinking about this aspect of your team. Look at every team member individually. How well do you know them? Do you know their last names? Do you know who are there in their family? Do you know where they live? These are general things and you might think they are irrelevant to your leadership ideals. But, you know these things about your friends, don't you? Then you need to know them about your team members as well. After all, if you deal with your team members as you deal with your friends, they are only going to be happier about working in your team.

Most importantly, you have to understand what each member of your team is capable of doing and what they cannot do so well. All fingers of the hand are not the same, and likewise every member in a team cannot be the same. This is clearly apparent in sports teams. Sports teams are built with the principle that people of different skills can come together, so that one person can fend for another when the time comes.

Your team is an assortment of such different people too. When you realize what each one can do, you bring about optimum productivity in your team.

That brings us to yet another crucial aspect of effective leadership-fruitful division of labor. This helps you to distribute work in such a way that everyone gets to do what they like to, and that's what enhances the results your team obtains.
