Through forgiveness, which essentially means recognizing the insubstantiality of the past and allowing the present moment to be as it is, the miracle of transformation happens not only within but also without. - -Eckhart Tolle
When we let go of expectations we let go of suffering. When we expect something to happen we can in turn create suffering as we hope for this to happen. Hoping for something to happen creates anxiety within us. An attachment to these outcomes chains us to what may or may not happen. When we remove these shackles we remove the suffering that these shackles create within us.
What causes us to suffer?
When we hold onto past moments those thoughts keep us in the past. When we start hold onto people, places, events we are unable to move on. This in turn causes us to not give the present moment our full attention.
Our thoughts enslave us. The way things should or should not be trap us in life. Reliving the same event causes us to suffer that in turn causes us to expect it to happen again. Being stuck reliving the same past event in our mind creates more suffering within us. Only when we break free of these shackles and move into the NOW do we end suffering and attachment to expectations.
Why do we not want to let go?
Some people deny that things have happened, hoping that it will only be temporary, or that the other party will come to their senses, and want to get back with you. Some prefer to be victims. Letting go does not mean that you forget that something happened in your life. Letting go is making peace with it, and allowing all feelings/sensations associated with it to be released from you. So when you do happen onto an event, or person, they are seen in a new light one of freedom, and peace.
Does attachment play into not being able to let go?
Many get attached to a perceived outcome. They expect things to happen, and to only happen that way. There is nothing wrong with hoping for the best. If you went into every venture with a negative mindset that it was going to fail, chances are it will fail. You must still be positive that your venture will succeed, but at the same time be ok with the possibility of it not succeeding, if that were to be the case.
Your partner breaks up with you and you are unable to move on. Why are you unable to let go? There are a few reasons for this. The bigger ones would be that you expected to be with them forever. So you were attached to the expectation that you had envisioned.
When you are wronged by someone you can end up holding onto those feelings, memories, and events from that experience. Many get to the point where they can't let go because they can not forgive the person that wronged them. Forgiveness needs to occur to allow peace of mind. Forgiveness does not mean you condone the actions. It means you forgive them for what they did. They made the best decisions with the knowledge that they had at the time. Forgiveness of self also needs to occur. Many feel that what happened they deserved. Those instances happened as a result of circumstances, not because it was deserved. You can however choose to let go, move on, and create a life of freedom and happiness.
