Tips to Successful Goal Setting

Thursday, January 20, 2011
How are you doing with your resolutions? Did you set a goal to lose weight, stop drinking, stop smoking? If so, how are you doing?

Here are some tips to stay focused with your goals:

1. Write your goals down and post them where you can see them- Seeing your goals are a gentle reminder of what you want to accomplish.

2. Set an action plan around each goal. For example, if your goal is too loose weight set an action plan around it. Maybe your action plan is to walk everyday, or to take an exercise class each week, or to stop eating sugar. Make your action plan simple and easy to follow through on. It's the small steps towards the goal that matter.

3. Solicit support. Instead of working out alone, get a work out partner. Instead of trying to quit smoking alone, ask for your Dr.'s help, instead of stopping drinking alone join a support group. Having help gives you the support needed to be successful. It also helps to have accountability around your goals.

4. Track your success- If your goal is too loose weight; weigh your self each week and track your success. If your goal is to quit smoking each day that you don't smoke maybe put a star on your calendar. Seeing your success is empowering!

5. Visualize yourself staying on track. Before your start your day and several times a day see yourself following through on your action steps...See yourself at your goal weight, or no longer smoking. Try to feel how good it will feel when you have accomplished your goal. Visualization is a powerful subconscious way of making your goals come true.

Follow these steps and you will have a Happy New Year!
